For those of you who don’t know about Layar and AR (Augmented Reality):
As the name suggests, Augmented Reality is an innovative concept in which real world pictures, videos and other content is enhanced by 3D effects, animations, games etc to make it interactive and immersive. For example you can see how the street, you are walking at, looked 100 years ago, or play a war game with your city as the background etc.
“Augmented reality is changing the way people view the world,” said Raimo Van Der Klein, CEO and co-founder of Layar. “Layar’s goal is to bring the AR experience into people’s everyday lives and with this offering we are able to provide Nokia users with that rich digital experience on their mobile phones.”
Layar is an Augmented Reality browser app for mobiles. There are thousands of “Layers” (Both free and paid Layar add-ons, just like game ROMs for emulators) available for Layar to enjoy different AR concepts. For example with the help of different layers you can -
Play – games (new and old) in the interactive 3D space around you
Socialize and share - photos, Tweets and check-in to location apps like Foursquare and Gowalla
Find - local (nearby) restaurants, bars, stores or even houses for rent
Watch - history of your area as it appears before your eyes
Now Layar Reality Browser, (Earlier available for iPhone and Android devices), is also available for Symbian OS. According to Layars official blog-post it is compatible with Symbian S60 (5th ed.) and Symbian^3 devices having GPS, front camera, compass (Magnetometer) and accelerometer i.e.
Symbian^3 – Nokia N8, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia E7
Symbian S60 5th Ed. – Nokia N97, Nokia N97-mini only
Layar for Symbian can be downloaded free from Ovi Store (launch Ovi Store at your phone and search for “Layar”). Various “Layers” can be downloaded from within the app.
Besides you can also download Layar for iPhone from Here
Or for Android phones from Here.
NOTE: Layar also recommends to update your device to the latest firmware to ensure smooth functioning of the app and thus the “augmented reality experience".
